"Mene Mene Teqel Uparsin: Daniel 5.25 in Cuneiform"

By David Instone -Brewer (Tyndale Bulletin 1991 42.2 pp. 310-316) (online-version)

Mene mene teqel uparsin are numbers 60, 60, 1, 1/2 which Daniel interpreted by Aramiac puns. When they are written in cuneiform they form a pattern which a would be scratched by a the fingers of a hand forming a fist, ie: | | | -|- An upright stroke can mean either 60 or 1 according to context, so these marks can add up to 121.5, 62.5 or 3.5. The latter two numbers are very important in the numerical prophecies in the second half of Daniel.
