The law against "taking two wives in their lives" in Damascus Document 4.21 was thought to be a prohibition of remarriage. However, the subsequent discovery of regulations at Qumran concerning divorce has given weight to Rabin's earlier study showing the link with Lev.18.18 which forbids marrying a sister "within the lifetime" of the other. Qumran theology regarded all Israelite women as sisters, so this passage is an argument against polygamy, not remarriage.
