If only I had published this as a book instead of a learned scholarly article I would be as rich and famous as Bart Ehrman. This article provides a thorough history of the discussion of the idea of "reverential alterations" (a far more nuanced term than Bart's "orthodox corruption") in the history of NT textual criticism; and demonstrates their presence in the textual tradition of the synoptic gospels. I am rather more cautious than Bart in extrapolating from this evidence to generalisations about the state of the whole tradition.
