"Israel outside the Land: The Transjordanian Tribes in 1 Chronicles 5"

By Peter J. Williams, in V. Philips Long, David W. Baker and Gordon J. Wenham, eds., Windows into Old Testament History: Evidence, Argument, and the Crisis of "Biblical Israel" (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2002) 147-60.

Information given about the Transjordanian tribes in 1 Chronicles 5 is compared with information about the Transjordan in other biblical texts and in the Mesha Stele. It is found that a prima facie chronological placing of the narratives also produces a historically plausible sequence of events and reveals significant independent coincidences in detail between the narratives.
