The Gospel descriptions of Jesus' interactions with demons are both different and similar to experiences of the author during psychiatric training. The descriptions are similar but significantly different to the symptoms of voices and compulsion found in some psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, mania or psychotic depression. However, they are very similar to the details of an unexplained case where the patient was able to answer someone speaking inaudibly behind their back, with a series of personalities claiming to possess the person.
