The OT prophets portray God as marrying Israel and Judah at Sinai and both those marriages going wrong. Israel committed adultery with idols and was sent away as a divorcee. Judah was warned that if she continued in the same way, she would suffer the same fate. But she was never actually given a certificate of divorce. Jeremiah pondered how God could remarry Israel, till he (and other prophets) found that she would be reunited with Judah and together they would remarry as a virgin bride. The third wedding is when Christ marries his bride, which the NT portrays as the one and only bride encompassing Israel and Gentiles.
