"The Use of Rabbinic Sources in Gospel Studies"

By David Instone -Brewer (Tyndale Bulletin 50, 1999, 281-298) (online-version)

A review article of how three authors have succeeded in using rabbinic background to illustrate the NT: Brad Young on the Parables; Roger Aus on the woman caught in adultery; Maurice Casey's search for the Aramaic behind Mark. They have employed traditional scholarship, historical criticism and literary criticism, but they and similar studies would greatly benefit from the additional use of redaction criticism of rabbinic material, as developed by Neusner.
